Warning: Don’t Eat This Alone

In our search for the perfect carnivorous meal we end up getting our fair share of hits and an even bigger share of misses. Whiskers (more on him later) says if you want an excellent steak, you make it yourself. And he’s usually right. But this, my friends, was not one of the misses. This was one of the BEST steaks we’ve ever had. It’s called a Tomahawk and it’s absolutely, mouth watering-ly delicious! What’s a tomahawk, you say? I really didn’t know either and had to look it up. I vaguely remembered one of those Facebook videos of a really obscenely large piece of meat with a “handle” but I was on a Facebook stalking mission so couldn’t stop to watch (don’t judge, you know you stalk too). Here’s what I found out.

The Tomahawk steak is often referred to as a cowboy steak or bone-in ribeye. Surprised? I was. Basically it’s the ribeye with about 5-8 inches of the rib bone still attached for dramatic flair. The exposed bone is “French’ed”, meaning the excess meat is removed until the bone is revealed. It’s called a Tomahawk because it looks like an axe. I agree.

Let’s take a closer look at this beauty.

Perfect grill marks, medium rare, salt & pepper and THIS is one magnificent and dramatic looking steak. Don’t you think? Whiskers can’t take credit for this one though. If you read my previous blog, we made it out of the shroud of flu that was cloaking our house and made it to Mexico! This steak was actually savored and consumed at Sonora Grill Prime in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico after a day of sunshine and beach relaxation (more on that later). They don’t have a website, but the link will take you to their info on Trip Advisor and you drool over some of the other menu items and get a feel for the setting for this beautiful meal.
